Auto insurance

Most drivers know the price of their policy and very little about its shape. The shape is where the consequences live.

What the state requires and why it is not enough

California sets minimum financial responsibility limits for private passenger vehicles. Those minimums are a floor for legal operation, not an estimate of what a serious collision costs. A single hospital stay can exhaust a minimum bodily injury limit before anything else is considered, and the driver remains personally exposed for the balance. Anyone with savings, equity or future earnings to protect should treat the statutory minimum as a starting number rather than a target.

The coverages, separated

Bodily injury liability pays others when you are at fault for injuring them. Property damage liability pays for their property. Neither one repairs your own car.

Collision pays for damage to your vehicle from impact, regardless of fault. Comprehensive — sometimes called other-than-collision — covers the rest: theft, fire, vandalism, hail, glass, and animal strikes. Both carry deductibles, and both are generally optional unless a lender requires them.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist cover is the one people skip and later wish they had not. It responds when the driver who hit you has no insurance or not enough of it, and in practice it is the coverage that protects you against other people's decisions.

Medical payments covers injury costs for you and your passengers without waiting for a fault determination.

Actual cash value, and what a total loss means

Collision and comprehensive on an ordinary policy pay actual cash value: what the vehicle was worth immediately before the loss, not what it costs to buy a replacement today and not what remains on the loan. When those numbers diverge — which they routinely do on a newer financed vehicle — the owner is left with a shortfall. Loan or lease gap cover addresses that specific difference and is a separate purchase.

The business-use question

This matters more in Kern County than it does in a commuter suburb. A personal auto policy is written for personal use. Once a vehicle is regularly carrying tools or equipment for work, being driven by an employee, making deliveries, or operating as part of a business, the policy may not respond the way its owner expects — and the moment that becomes clear is usually the moment of a claim.

This is not a reason to panic about an occasional errand. It is a reason to describe the actual pattern of use accurately when the policy is written, and to say so when the pattern changes.

Who counts as a driver

Household members of driving age are generally expected to be disclosed, including a newly licensed teenager and an adult child home for a period. Undisclosed regular drivers are a common source of coverage disputes. If someone is driving the car with any regularity, the insurer should know their name.

Deductibles are a budget decision, not a coverage decision

Raising a collision or comprehensive deductible lowers the premium, and for a driver with savings that is often a sensible trade. The question worth asking honestly is whether the higher figure is an amount you could produce on the day of a claim without difficulty. A deductible you cannot actually fund converts a covered loss into an uncovered one, because the repair simply does not happen.

The related habit is to revisit the decision as a vehicle ages. There is a point at which the annual cost of collision cover approaches a meaningful share of what the car is worth, and past that point many owners reasonably drop it and self-insure the vehicle while keeping their liability limits high. That is a defensible choice; dropping liability to save the same money is not.

Before you compare two quotes

A lower premium usually reflects lower limits, higher deductibles, or fewer coverages rather than a better deal. Comparing two policies means comparing the same six or seven numbers, in the same order, on both declarations pages. The California Department of Insurance publishes consumer guidance on automobile coverage that sets out the categories plainly.

§Ask about an auto policy

Tell us where the vehicles are kept and how many are on the policy. Susman Insurance Agency will reply with the questions worth reviewing first.

Submitting asks Susman Insurance Agency to read your note and reply. No coverage is requested or bound by sending it, and nothing changes on any policy you already hold.

Nothing on this page sets the terms of any policy. Your own declarations page, policy wording and endorsements determine which coverages apply, at what limits, with what deductibles, and they control in every case.
